MS Dhoni admitted his mistake of entering the field from the dugout during the 2019 IPL after the umpire made his call. The renowned keeper-batter acknowledged the immense pressure cricket puts on players.
The incident in question happened during the Chennai Super Kings vs. Rajasthan Royals game in Jaipur. Surprisingly, Dhoni walked onto the field to protest with the authorities after the on-field umpires overturned a no-ball call for height in the last over. Despite winning the exciting match, the Super Kings’ captain was fined 50% of match fees for his outburst.
During a recent occasion, Mandira Bedi questioned MS Dhoni about the times he had lost his composure. The Ranchi native suggested that cricketers should avoid talking during tense situations to prevent matters from spiraling out of control.
In an interview that Mastercard posted to YouTube, he stated:
“Lots of times, lots of times. One of the times, I walked out on the field, it was a big mistake. But other than that also there have been instances where something gets triggered because we play the sport where the stakes are very high, you are supposed to win every game and manage a lot of things.

“That’s why I said when you are not happy about something or angry or frustrated, keep your mouth shut, try getting away from it for a little while, take deeper breaths. It’s similar to handling pressure, if you can cut yourself off from the result aspect. Your emotion should never affect your decision making.”

In the IPL, Dhoni has left his mark by leading the Super Kings to five titles, which is a tie for the most in history. He has captained in a record 226 matches and has 264 caps, making him the most-capped player in IPL history.

Before the major auction the Super Kings decided to spend ₹4 crore on acquiring their former captain as an uncapped player. Under a change made by IPL after its return from suspension Indian players who had been out of national team cricket for over five years qualified to participate in uncapped player bidding.
A day prior to the 2024 Indian Premier League, Dhoni resigned as captain, giving Ruturaj Gaikwad the reins. But under the latter’s command, the Yellow Army failed to place in the top four.
