Phil Salt of Royal Challengers Bengaluru after wining the match during the 2025 IPL Qualifier Finals match

Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first team to secure a spot in the IPL 2025 final on Thursday after destroying the Punjab Kings by eight wickets. Suyash Sharma and Josh Hazlewood’s three-wicket hauls and Phil Salt’s outstanding half-ton helped RCB triumph in New Chandigarh.

This was the first time the New PCA Stadium had hosted an IPL playoff match. The local team, the Punjab Kings, also advanced to Qualifier 1. However, the Kings were bowled out for 101 runs, and the RCB scored 106/2 in 10 overs to win by eight wickets.

The Punjab Kings lost the IPL 2025 Qualifier 1 match, making it a night to remember. During the match between PBKS and RCB, the following five records were set and broken.

1. RCB create history with biggest win by balls left in IPL playoffs

Rajat Patidar and Phil Salt of Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrate winning the 2025 IPL Qualifier Finals match

The Indian Premier League playoffs were introduced in 2011. This is the first time since then that a side has won the match with 60 balls left after chasing down a target in just 10 overs. With 57 balls left in the final last year, the Kolkata Knight Riders defeated SunRisers Hyderabad.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru launched an all-out assault on the Punjab Kings from the start, finishing on 106/2 in 10 overs. With six fours and three sixes in his undefeated 27-ball 56, Phil Salt stole the show.

2. RCB broke another playoffs record

Shashank Singh is cleaned up amid PBKS’ collapse, Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Royal Challengers Bengaluru required only 14.1 overs to dismiss the Punjab Kings in the first innings. The Bengaluru-based team bowled their opponents out for 101 runs with three wickets from Suyash Sharma and three from Josh Hazlewood.

In the history of the IPL playoffs, this is the first occasion a team has bowled out an opponent in fewer than 15 overs. In the meantime, PBKS has achieved the miserable distinction of being the first team to be bowled out in a playoff match in fewer than 15 overs.

3. Punjab Kings earn unwanted record in playoffs history

Preity Zinta co-owner of Punjab Kings and Shreyas Iyer after RCB VS PBKS Match

In the first innings of the Qualifier 1 encounter against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings were dismissed for a mere 101 runs. In the opening innings of a postseason game, this is now the lowest team total ever recorded by any club.

This record was formerly held by the Kolkata Knight Riders. In the 2017 Qualifier 2 encounter against the Mumbai Indians, the Knight Riders lost every wicket they had for 107.

4. Josh Hazlewood becomes 1st overseas player to achieve mega feat for RCB

Virat Kohli joins in the celebration as Josh Hazlewood bagged his third, Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Taking more than 20 wickets in a single IPL season is a difficult task for any player because the league features the world’s greatest hitters. Josh Hazlewood, however, has accomplished the uncommon accomplishment of taking more than 20 wickets for RCB in two separate IPL seasons.

Hazlewood became the first foreign player to accomplish this feat for RCB in 2022 and again in 2025. For RCB, Yuzvendra Chahal has claimed over 20 wickets in three distinct seasons.

5. Prabhsimran Singh’s unique record

Prabhsimran Singh of Punjab Kings plays a shot during the 2025 IPL Qualifier Finals match

Prabhsimran Singh is the first Indian uncapped player to pile up 500 or more runs for Punjab Kings in a season. Only the second uncapped player after Shaun Marsh to do that for PBKS.

In the Qualifier 1 match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Singh clocked 18 runs off 10 balls. Singh, meanwhile, has 517 runs in the tournament and thanks to his 18-run knock he’s the tournament’s second highest scorer behind the Indian player.
