Shubman Gill, India’s newly chosen Test captain, set an example on Day 1 of the five-match series against England at Headingley in Leeds on Friday, June 20. After facing 140 deliveries, the right-hander reached his century in style with a boundary off Josh Tongue.
He became the fourth Indian captain to score a century in his Test captaincy debut, following Vijay Hazare (against England in 1951), Sunil Gavaskar (against New Zealand in 1976), and Virat Kohli (against Australia in 2014), according to Cricbuzz. This was his sixth Test ton overall and his second away from home.

Gill reached the milestone in the 75th over of the first-innings of India. Tongue bowled a half volley, outside off, and Gill forward then played it between cover point and this was diffused to the boundary. The 25year old began the party with a bang. He took off his helmet and embraced his batting partner Rishabh Pant and then came out with his trademark bow celebration as he cheered with applause of the crowd and his teammates at the stadium.
