India players observe a minutes silence in memory of former India Cricketer, Dilip Doshi, who sadly passed away ahead of day 5 of the 1st Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Headingley on June 24, 2025 in Leeds

England and Indian players wore black armbands before the start of the fifth day of the first test match of the series underway and also observed a minute silence in memory of former Indian cricketer Dilip Doshi who died at 77 on Monday June 23.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not only supported the family of Doshi but also lamented over the demise of one of the gems of Indian cricket. Heartwarming speeches by the Honorary Secretary, Devajit Saikia as well on the current president, Roger Binny and on the legacy of Doshi were made.

Speaking of how things stood previous to the final day, England needed 350 runs to take the lead while keeping all ten of their wickets intact. Despite the Indians’ brief six-over burst at the close of the fourth day, they were able to hold their own and avoid losing any wickets. Ben Duckett (nine off 11) and Zak Crawley (12 off 25) persevered to lead their team to 21 without a loss.

KL Rahul gets a hug from Rishabh Pant after completing his century, England vs India, 1st Test,

The hosts batted after India were knocked out for 364 in 94 overs in their second innings. Apart from the knocks made by KL Rahul (137 off 247) and Rishabh Pant (118 off 240), they had nothing noteworthy to display. Josh Tongue (3/72 in 18 overs) and Brydon Carse (3/80 in 19 overs) shared six wickets between them.

Similar to the previous innings, India collapsed in the second innings, losing their final six wickets while making very little impact on the scoreboard. They were bowled for 364 to set the hosts a goal of 371 runs.
