Fans criticized the on-field umpire, Sharfuddoula, for allowing Yashasvi Jaiswal to use DRS after the 15-second timer expired on Friday, July 4. It all took place at Edgbaston during the last session of Day 3 of the second Test match between England and India.
The second innings of the Indian team started after England was bowled out for 407. Jaiswal and KL Rahul, the opening pair, played with the goal of consistently setting boundaries and applying pressure to the home team.
However, bowler Josh Tongue’s fullish delivery in the eighth over trapped Yashasvi Jaiswal (28 off 22) LBW, and he was declared out. Rahul and the southpaw then conferred to choose whether or not to accept a review.

Yashasvi Jaiswal took a review even though the pair had used up their 15-second timer. The umpire sent the verdict upstairs after accepting the DRS call. Consequently, Sharfuddoula left England captain Ben Stokes furious.
Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the dressing room after the ball-tracking revealed that it was crashing on the leg stump. India thereby lost their review as well.
On the social media site X, fans vented their dissatisfaction with the umpire’s call. Among them, one wrote:
Here are the other reactions:
This is absolutely fuckin third class umpiring
Even a blind man could have seen Jaiswal taking a review after almost 17 seconds.
Why the fuck they referred it to 3rd umpire??

That was clear cheating by the umpires. The DRS timer was over, yet they allowed Jaiswal to take the review. Pathetic decision by the on-field umpire and equally disappointing from the third umpire, who could have upheld the rules and disallowed the review. #ENGvIND

Technically, the umpire did England a favour by accepting the review. 😅 India could have saved a review at least. pic.twitter.com/74K2oVmVGP

“Match ref or TV umpire should have got on the walkie-talkie and told umpires Jaiswal was out of time and had to clear off. No problem – India burned a review anyway,” a fan wrote.
“Stokes was fighting hard with Umpire to save a review for India, what sportsmanship. 🫡” another posted.
“The @ICC need to urgently explain why that review was allowed despite clearly being out of time. Utter disgrace. That umpire needs banning. Why did the 3rd umpire not intervene?” a fan tweeted.
India remain in control despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s wicket on Day 3 of 2nd Test

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early, but his 51-run stand with KL Rahul helped the team get off to a good start. With Rahul (28) and Karun Nair (7) at the crease, India was 64/1 at stumps on Day 3.
The visitors are up by 244 runs and will almost definitely maintain their lead as the game enters its fourth day. India will try to play out as many overs as possible on Saturday in order to reach their objective of 450+ runs, while Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant have not yet arrived.

However, if England can bundle out the Indian team early, they will be prepared to pursue the aim. The hosts were able to successfully chase down a 371-run total in the first Test of the series.
