Shubman Gill takes a stump after India won the 2nd Rothesay Test Match

India’s Shubman Gill led team made history by defeating England by 336 runs in the second Test of the five-match series on Sunday, July 6 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. As a result, the tourists broke their previous record against the West Indies (318-run triumph in Antigua in 2019) and recorded their largest overseas victory (by runs).

It is interesting to note that the England team captained by Ben Stokes was dismissed cheaply with just 271 runs on the board in their second innings, and was chasing an impossible innings total of 608 in the second session of the fifth and last day of the match. The victory gave parity on the five-match series with the visitors as they gave loss to visitors in the series opener that they lost by five wickets at Headingley.

“He hit the right lengths and was getting the ball to move both ways, which was difficult on a pitch like this. He was magnificent for us.”

Following unprecedented knocks of 269 and 161 in the same Test, Gill, who was named Player of the Match, went on to discuss his success mantra. He added:

“I am definitely feeling comfortable with my game and if we are able to win the series with my contributions, it’ll be great. As I said before, I want to play as a batsman, and go out as a batsman, and make decisions as a batsman. Sometimes you won’t take some risks when you’re thinking as a captain which you have to do as a batsman.”
