India's Rishabh Pant (right) reacts after injuring his finger during day one of the Third Rothesay Men's Test at Lord's, London

Rishabh Pant, India’s vice-captain and keeper, sustained a blow to his left index finger during Day 1 of the Lord’s Test against England on Thursday. The visitors have been holding the wicket in his absence thanks to Dhruv Jurel.

Rishabh Pant hurt his finger diving to intercept a widish delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that was drifting down the leg side in the 34th over of England’s innings. He only managed to make minimal contact, though, and as a result, he gave up two byes.

Rishabh Pant was treated by the medical team right away. He quickly fled the field as Jurel was named the replacement custodian, despite initially putting his gloves back on.

It is important to note that teams have been permitted to replace a keeper in the MCC since 2017, but they are not permitted to bat. If Pant recovers during India’s innings, it will be exciting to watch; if not, the team captained by Shubman Gill will have to bat with ten players.

Rishabh Pant revealed a major explanation for his incessant chirping behind the stumps during a pre-game news conference. With his speech, Pant has taken the initiative to coach the bowlers and have amusing conversations with the opposing hitters.

Rishabh Pant claimed to have picked up the habit from his late mentor Tarak Sinha when he was a little boy. According to India Today, he stated:

“The idea is to keep talking to myself as a batter. It’s always been like this. But in this series, the stump mic is picking up a lot more.”

“As a batter, I’ve been doing the same things. As a kid, I used to keep telling myself what to do. My coach, the late Tarak Sinha, advised me to keep talking to myself. Whatever he taught me, I still try to follow the same things.”

Interestingly, the stump-mic picked up the conversation between Rishabh Pant and Harry Brook during the second Test at Edgbaston. England batter sledged Pant by requesting him to score the fastest hundred in Tests but the 27-year-old unflustered replied that he is not hungry to create records.
