Joe Root made history on the pitch with a brilliant moment during the current Day 2 of the third Test match between England and India at Lord’s. Karun Nair was on his way to reaching his well-earned fifty when he was removed by Root’s spectacular one-handed diving catch at first slip. A strong 61-run partnership with KL Rahul was ended by the dismissal, and Root’s 211th outfield catch in Test cricket surpassed the record held by former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid.
In reply to England’s 387, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early but recovered quickly owing to Nair and Rahul’s partnership. The incident, however, occurred after England captain Ben Stokes struck the edge of Nair’s bat, which flew directly in Root’s face. Nair was squared up by Stokes’ angled delivery. The ball flew low toward first slip after touching the bat’s shoulder.

Joe Root, slightly wider than normal, dived to his left and caught the ball with his wrong hand, just millimetres above the turf. Nair stepped back for a 40 off 62 when the third umpire verified that the fingers were beneath the ball. With this catch, Root also overtook Dravid as the highest-scoring non-wicketkeeper catcher in Test cricket history (211). This milestone was noteworthy because it coincided with Root’s 37th Test century.

Jasprit Bumrah Etches Name on Lord’s Honours Board After Five-Wicket Haul

Jasprit Bumrah became the 14th Indian bowler to win a spot on the Lord’s honours board for his bowling in the first innings, but Root’s catch and century garnered the most attention. Bumrah was playing at his peak at the home of cricket, finishing with statistics of 5/74 in 27 overs, despite missing the previous Test. Jofra Archer, Stokes, Chris Woakes, Root, and Harry Brook were among the victims of the renowned Indian pacer. With Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease, India’s total is 80/2 as of this writing, and the visitors are down by 307 runs.
