Team India suffered yet another setback when all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out for the remainder of the series owing to injury. Following the recent injuries to Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep, the visitors were left with a serious headache when the young player suffered a knee injury during a gym session.

The youthful all-rounder did not make the starting XI for the series opener, as the squad preferred Shardul Thakur’s experience. Reddy was included in the playing XI for the most recent two Test matches, nevertheless, after Team India lost by four wickets at Headingley, Leeds.

He made 45 runs averaging 11.25 runs and took three wickets averaging 37 in the series but the digits do not reflect how India will miss his services after he was injured.

Speaking of this, we will now examine three reasons why the injury of Nitish Kumar Reddy is a big blow to India going into ENG vs IND 2025 4th Test.

1. His presence strengthened the lower middle order and was a handy bowling option

In terms of bowling, the all-rounder was not anticipated to contribute much because India already had three frontline pacers and two spinners. But he was also able to contribute in that area, particularly during the first innings at Lord’s. In addition to achieving the initial few breakthroughs, he occasionally outperformed his peers in getting the ball to swing and nip with his soft nip.

The all-rounder would have been a great alternative for Shubman Gill to turn to in the last stages of the series, especially with two pacers already sidelined due to injuries, while workload management and exhaustion are also important consideration.

Team India did not hesitate to turn to Nitish Kumar Reddy immediately following the first Test, since he was probably the missing component in the playing XI. Even though he was unable to contribute to the second Test at Edgbaston, the team’s dynamic and composition following his addition made it clear that this was the right course of action.

A strong batting option at No. 7 or No. 8 is not a luxury enjoyed by many teams. India bet in favor of batting depth, relying on the skill of their frontline bowlers, and it paid off. The inclusion of Nitish Kumar Reddy and other selection calls significantly reduced the likelihood of collapses in this specific combination.

2. Nitish Kumar Reddy was adapting well to English conditions and was due for a big score

The all-round player proved why the team was correct to keep him in the starting lineup even after a subpar debut against Edgbaston. Reddy demonstrated that he is more than just a useful option in the batting order by playing out 144 deliveries over the course of both innings in the third Test at Lord’s.

In the first innings, he appeared to be in good form until Ben Stokes’ outstanding delivery put an end to his stay. He faced a charged-up Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes during the run chase on Day 5, and he persevered through their relentless sledging and short ball barrage to score a grizzled 53-ball 13 before nicking one off a brilliant Chris Woakes delivery just before lunch.

He was increasing in stature as the trip continued and may have helped the team in some way. The loss of Nitish Kumar Reddy, who could have been a key X-Factor, comes across as a huge blow during a part of the trip when India needed their best combination to stay in the series.

3. India do not have credible options that offer the same assurance as Nitish Kumar Reddy

After Nitish Kumar Reddy suffered an unusual injury, the team combination that India wants is currently in complete disarray. The visitors have the option of adding a third spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav or sticking with the same lineup by substituting Shardul Thakur like for like. Playing a batter like Dhruv Jurel or going all out with the pace attack by bringing in Prasidh Krishna and Anshul Kamboj are other options.

However, none of the aforementioned probable pairings are Team India’s first choice, as they lack the balance and prowess of Nitish Kumar Reddy. The young player’s all-around skills allowed him to relieve the frontline bowlers and provide batting depth, but India may have to make some concessions when they replace him in the starting lineup.
