Rohit Sharma is a very well-known Indian and international cricketer. He is regarded as a big-match cricketer in One-Day International (ODI) cricket and is also regarded as a big score hitter when it comes to hundreds. He stands third in the list of most players to have most hundreds in ODIs. Year after year, Rohit has established a reputation of being consistent and a good captain to lead the team.
In recent weeks, however, the ODI captaincy has become a talking point. India’s young Test squad impressed during their recent tour of England, with Shubman Gill leading from the front. As the next generation makes its presence felt, speculation has grown over whether Rohit will continue as skipper in the 50-over game or pass the baton to Gill.

The 38-year-old opener signalled the beginning of a new phase in his career earlier this year. After the IPL 2025 season, he announced his retirement from Test cricket, saying he wanted to channel all his energy into the ODI format. He then stepped away from the game for a few weeks, enjoying a family holiday in England, before returning to Mumbai last week.
Rohit is well on his way back to training like he never slowed down. On August 12, he posted an Instagram story in a local gym where he was traning with close friend and former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar a guru who has played a key role in shaping the careers of such players as KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, and Rinku Singh among others. The photograph did no further confirmation, what most of us knew, Rohit wants to play at the highest level just as he always desired.

Rohit’s continued attention to training indicates that he is preparing for the long run, with the 2027 ODI World Cup still 26 months away. Some members of the team management believe he deserves a farewell series, at least as captain, possibly against Australia, before relinquishing captaincy duties.
Rohit has been a formidable force in ODIs, reaching 32 hundreds and ranked third all-time, trailing only Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. He was also named Player of the Match in India’s Champions Trophy final win over New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma has appeared in 273 One-Day internationals (ODIs), amassing 11,168 runs at a very impressive average of 48.76. He is the only batsman who has hit a total of three ODI 200s with the highest score of 264 runs against Sri Lanka in a match in Kolkata. With the Indian board of cricket and selectors turning their attention towards the future of the team, Rohit has remained as motivated as he has ever been to remain at the top of the ODI cricket scenario.
