India's Jasprit Bumrah attends a practice session at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium

Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been making headlines since India’s historic Test visit of England. However, for once, it has not been due to his game-changing performances with the ball.

Instead, fans and former players are divided on how the 31-year-old handled his workload during the five-match series in England. Bumrah appeared in only three of the five Tests, and his involvement in India’s next assignment – the 2025 Asia Cup – has become the hot topic of conversation over the last week.

While Jasprit Bumrah’s presence will surely benefit the Indian team, the management may choose to rest him for the Asia Cup, listing three major reasons.

1. India’s Winning Formula in Dubai Works Even Without Jasprit Bumrah

If India could only chose one site throughout the world to defeat opponents without Jasprit Bumrah, it would be Dubai. The Men in Blue began the year by winning all five games at the venue, securing the 2025 Champions Trophy title.

With its talismanic bowler out of the tournament owing to injury, Team India employed a novel four-spinner tactic to stifle their opponents. The strategy called for them to field only one specialist seamer, with Hardik Pandya serving as a backup.

It is not unreasonable to expect the Indian research tank to apply a similar methodology to the slow and low Dubai wickets that are likely to be on offer in the Asia Cup.

With T20 as the competition format, India could easily field the dependable Arshdeep Singh as their specialist pacer, with four spinners wreaking havoc, similar to the Champions Trophy. Having a recent blueprint of the method working brilliantly should allow India to rest Bumrah for the Asia Cup in the UAE.

2. Jasprit Bumrah’s Role Is More Crucial in Test Cricket Than White-Ball Games

In the recent past months, some significant changes have been made to the Test squad with the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli retiring. Missing the 2025-WTC final India needs to restart by ensuring it reaches the top two and a chance of winning the maiden WTC title in its aim.

Three of their mainstays have left Tests one after another and the presence of Bumrah now is even more critical to Shubman Gill and his men. What occurred in England, where India did not lose their two Tests without Bumrah, can be chalked up as a fluke and not a pattern.

Furthermore, India has dominated T20Is with or without Bumrah due to their great bench strength. The champion pacer hasn’t played a T20I since winning Player of the Tournament in the 2024 World Cup.

However, the Men in Blue have not skipped a beat, winning 17 of their following 20 T20Is. As a result, the team would be better off if Bumrah skipped the Asia Cup, allowing him to play more Tests without having to manage his workload.

3. Bumrah playing the Asia Cup might be a response to critics over his body

Even though Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management discussions reached a boiling point when he skipped the final Test against England, various sources claim that a knee issue may have contributed to his absence. He had a rare off-day in the preceding Test at Manchester, with speeds far below his regular rate due to a potential injury.

Assuming the same, the 31-year-old must guarantee that his recuperation is comprehensive, given his extensive injury history.

The last thing Team India or Bumrah should do is reconsider their workload management approach and rush the seamer back into play in light of all the criticism. As probably the world’s best bowler, a fit Bumrah remains critical to India’s domination across forms over the next half-decade.
