Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India and president of the BCCI, has been named head coach of the Pretoria Capitals ahead of the SA20 2025 season. Ganguly will be coaching a professional team for the first time. With the social media post, the Centurion-based team greeted the 53-year-old and verified the news.
“The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach,” Pretoria wrote on Instagram.

The Pretoria Capitals have a record mixed record since the beginning of the SA20. They placed first in the table in the first edition in 2023, and qualified to the final where they were defeated by Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Their performance fell in the following seasons though.
The team failed to qualify to the playoffs in 2024 and 2025 when the entire crew finished on the fifth position in both seasons. Under Ganguly, the management will now be hoping to have a better campaign in the fourth edition of the tournament which commences on December 26. Besides, Shaun Pollock, the bowling hero of South Africa has been appointed an assistant coach. Strikingly, Sourav Ganguly replaces Jonathan Trott who stepped down after a poor 2025 season, where the Capitals had won only two matches in ten matches.
Sourav Ganguly has worked closely with Delhi Capitals in IPL, WPL

The former southpaw entered management after leaving international cricket in 2008, first as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and then as president of the BCCI from 2019 to 2022. Notably, he served as Director of Cricket for JSW Sports, the parent business of the Pretoria Capitals, where he collaborated closely with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL and WPL.
He has primarily held consulting positions in franchise cricket in the past. He joined Delhi Capitals as a mentor in 2019, working alongside Ricky Ponting, before leaving to take over as BCCI president. Later, in 2023, he rejoined the team as Director of Cricket. But this would be his first time fully overseeing a professional team’s coaching staff as head coach of the Pretoria Capitals. On September 9, Ganguly’s first significant task will be to supervise the player auction.
