Keshav Maharaj tripped through Australia's line-up, Australia vs South Africa

South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj climbed to the top of the Men’s ODI bowling rankings following a convincing performance (4/22 in 5.3 overs) in the opening ODI of the three-match series against England. Maharaja has surpassed Maheesh Theekshana, who is currently ranked second, with a rating of 690 as of September 2.

In fact, the country of the left-arm spinner does not have any of its representatives in the top 20 at the moment. The South Africans next on the list are Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. This is the third four-wicket of the format that Maharaj has achieved.

The brilliant work with the ball made Maharaj a Player of the Match. He disclosed that, he has lately made some changes in his bowling technique by observing other spinners around the globe. But the 35-year-old did recognize that the team was in transition.

” [I] thought [it] was a really good wicket. Little bit of nibble and fortunately our bowlers managed to utilise that. We know the English lads play extremely well in their conditions and so good to see the guys put their plans to fruition today. I have looked at some of the best in the world and sort of managed to make minor changes and it has paid dividends. We are in a wonderful place but we are still in transition. Good to see the guys put their hands up in every single game we play,” stated Maharaj, during the post-match presentation ceremony.

At Headingley, South Africa was the winner by seven wickets and by 175 balls. Wiaan Mulder (3/33 in seven overs) improved the performance of Maharaj in the first innings. Aiden Markram (86 off 55) led the assault in the second half with a rapid half-century that had two sixes and 13 fours.

In contrast, Markram’s opening partner Ryan Rickelton led the chase and remained undefeated at 31 off 59. Adil Rashid (3/26 in 3.5 overs) claimed all three of the Proteas’ wickets. The two remaining ODIs will be followed by three T20Is. The series’ second game is scheduled to take place at the Lord’s in London on Thursday, September 4.
