Rohit Sharma of India looks on ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Final

The Board of Control of cricket in India (BCCI) is set to deliberate on the future of Rohit Sharma as an ODI captain in a meeting on October 4 when the squad is being selected to play the next series against Australia. Rohit has already retired in T20Is and Test matches and the 50 over form is the only role he plays.

One of the critical issues of the meeting will be the long-term future of Rohit in ODIs as a player and as captain. The selection committee will hold a meeting with him and discuss his plans with him face to face. Rohit has just passed his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and this indicates that he is match-fit.

Rohit Sharma is currently 38 and will be 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup in South Africa takes place. Age will likely be a factor in the BCCI’s decision, and it remains uncertain whether he will continue in the management’s plans as a player or captain.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Likely to Feature in India’s ODI Series vs Australia

India is likely to include most players from its 2025 Champions Trophy–winning squad in the ODI series against Australia, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer also seems set to retain his place in the 50-over team.

The question remains whether Iyer will return to the T20I side as well. Since bilateral series allow more than 15 players, both Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal could find places in the squad after Jaiswal missed the Asia Cup 2025.

India will play three ODIs followed by five T20Is in Australia. The limited-overs series begins on Sunday, October 19, at Perth Stadium, while Australia has not yet announced its squad.
