Indian captain Shubman Gill became the first Indian player to reach a double hundred in England on Thursday, July 3. On Day 2 of the second Test match against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, his innings assisted the Indian team in posting an enormous total.

On that point, let’s take a look at the Indian players who scored the most individual Test runs in England.

1. Shubman Gill – 269, Edgbaston, 2025

Shubman Gill, the Indian skipper, carved his name into history with a magnificent knock during the ongoing Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill has disproved all of his skeptics on foreign territory in just his second game as captain.

When Gill appeared at the crease, India was batting first and on 95/2. Gill kept the team’s pace with his peculiar boundaries, a strong defense, and a far better method to counter pacers.

Along the way, he had a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (89), while Washington Sundar (42) provided support.

Shubman Gill achieved the highest solo knock by an Indian batsman in England with a hammering 269 off 387 balls. His hit put the team in the lead and helped India reach a 587-run total.

2. Sunil Gavaskar – 221, The Oval, 1979

The first Indian batsman to score a double century in England was Sunil Gavaskar. He accomplished the feat at The Oval in the fourth Test of the 1979 tour.

England were all out for 305 after batting first. India was only able to respond with 202 runs after that. India was given a target of 438 after the home team declared on 334/8.

India needed a good start to stay in the competition as they chased a difficult total. Their openers, Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan, undoubtedly provided them with that. Before Chauhan (80) got out, the pair put up an incredible 213-run partnership.

Gavaskar continued to be a standfast at the crease and another 153-run partnership was made with Dilip Vengsarkar (52). The Indians lost wickets in batches after ‘Little Master’ was sent to pavilion on 221 off 443 balls. They however saved the game since they were on 429/8.

3. Rahul Dravid – 217, The Oval, 2002

The fourth test in India tour in England was played at The Oval. England batted first and they scored a total of 515-runs of which Michael Vaughan scored 195 runs.

India’s opening players did not contribute enough in response. But Rahul Dravid was able to be ‘The Wall’ in India’s batting lineup, leading the team through difficult overs. He was run out after scoring 217 off 468 balls. In the end, the Indian squad was bundled out for 508. The game concluded in a draw after England did well to score 114/0.

4. Sachin Tendulkar – 193, Leeds, 2002

The third test of the tour of 2002 between India and England was played in Leeds. Will to bat first ended up being in favor of India. They received an outstanding beginning with a 170-run partnership between Sanjay Bangar (68) and Rahul Dravid, in spite of the fact that the initial scorer Virender Sehwag was caught early.

Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of Indian men national team comes in at number five on the desirable list. In August 1990 he played an outstanding innings of the third Test of the bilateral series of that year against England at The Oval.

As an opener, Shastri scored 187 runs off 436 balls with 23 fours to enable India to declare at an intimidating 606/9. Then the home side collapsed under pressure to be all-out on 340. England were having 477 of the fourth wicket after being enforced a follow on when the game was declared as a draw.
