Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Virat Kohli (C) tosses the ball as he enters the pitch to field during the IPL Match

The Indian premier league 19 th season will not have both the winners and the losers of the 20 th season as the opening match. The first two days of the tournament will have the finalists Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings playing individual matches.

Historically, the league would like to open the season with a high profile event which usually has the defending champions. This time, the curtain-raiser might be champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs the popularly-known Chennai Super Kings. Brand Finance and Duff and Phelps also reported that among the 4 most high profile marquee teams in the league are Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Yuzvendra Chahal picked two wickets in his first two overs, Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Punjab Kings

It is known that the losing team Punjab Kings will start playing against the Gujarat Titans on their home ground of Mullanpur on March 29. As it was already stated, the IPL season will begin on March 28 in Bengaluru.

BCCI to Reveal Initial IPL 2026 Schedule, Key Meetings Lined Up

IPL trophy prior to the 2025 IPL Final match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings at Narendra Modi Stadium

It had been established earlier that the 19th edition of the IPL will be held between March 28 and May 31, which is slightly different compared to the first edition of between March 26 and May 30. Nevertheless, not the full list of fixtures of the highly awaited event will be announced at once. Rather, the Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Devajit Saikia made it known that the first 20-day schedule of the tournament will be made known on Thursday, March 12.

In the meantime, the BCCI has told all the franchises that the annual meeting with team captains and coaches is going to be held in Mumbai on March 25. The meeting will have an agenda which is commonly shared later, but during the gathering, key rule changes and updates are often discussed with regard to the next IPL 2026 season. The board has also informed franchises that the photoshoot of captains will be done in New Delhi on March 15.

Dewald Brevis in RR vs CSK IPL 2025 Match

IPL 2026 is set to be an eventful event, as some of the teams fill their team with some key signings through the mini-auction. KKR and CSK are some of the teams that suffered dismal campaigns last year and have since resorted to wholesale changes in their teams in a bid to ensure they come out strongly in the new season.
