Punjab Kings (PBKS) co-owner Preity Zinta was overjoyed when skipper Shreyas Iyer hit a match-winning six off Ashwani Kumar in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1. Zinta was seen clapping in delight as Iyer led his team to victory in a 204-run chase with five wickets and an over remaining.
Ashwani went full and wide outside off, and Iyer lofted a crisp shot over long-on. This was his fourth maximum of the 19th over and his eighth of the match.

Shreyas Iyer took the lead with an undefeated 87 off 41 balls, which included five boundaries and eight sixes. When his team lost both of the openers inside the powerplay, the 30-year-old entered the game. To push his squad over the finish line, he stayed until the very end. Iyer’s 87-run knock brought his IPL season total to 600 runs. He was purchased by the Punjab-based team at last year’s super auction for an incredible INR 26.75 crore.

Shreyas Iyer played a match winning knock as he led PBKS to beat MI by 5 wickets and thereby PBKS team managing to reach the IPL 2025 final. They then got help from Nehal Wadhera, who made 48 off 29 balls which included 2 sixes and 4 fours. Priyansh Arya smashed 20 (10), while Josh Inglis smashed 38 (21). MI’s best bowler, Ashwani Kumar, took two wickets but let up 23 runs in the penultimate over.
Mumbai scored 203/6 in the 20 overs they were given after being asked to bat first. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav each contributed 44, while Jonny Bairstow and Naman Dhir each made 38 (24) and 37 (18). For Punjab, Azmatullah Omarzai took two wickets.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be taking on PBKS in the IPL 2025 summit clash at the the same venue on Tuesday, June 3. RCB will be looking to avenge their loss (8 wickets defeat) against Punjab in Qualifier 1. Both the teams are without an IPL trophy to their name so far, though Iyer would like to become the first captain to win consecutive titles as he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to glory last season.
