Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
India's Virat Kohli (R) and Rohit Sharma gesture during the first one-day international (ODI) cricket match between India and South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi

Indian opener Rohit Sharma was ecstatic after superstar batsman Virat Kohli’s ton. The pair had last scored centuries on November 30 (in Ranchi), the former’s 52nd in ODIs – also versus South Africa in the series’ opener. Rohit, clapping in the dugout, was visibly excited. In doing so he uttered a few cuss words to motivate his partner.

Virat Kohli was finally dismissed for 135 off 120 chasing a flatter back-of-length delivery angled around fifth stump, which took the top edge and ballooned up in the air. Ryan Rickelton took a fantastic catch holding onto the ball, to give his side the early break through. As Kohli trudged back to the pavilion, everyone at the JSCA International Stadium Complex was on its feet.

India Aim for Fresh Start After Test Whitewash

India’s Virat Kohli arrives to bat during the first one-day international (ODI) cricket match

The Men in Blue were asked to bat after Aiden Makram won the toss and elected to bowl first. Ruturaj Gaikwad was included in the mix and Tilak Varma dropped. Kohli come out to bat after Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early on into the innings. He and Rohit Sharma put on 136 for the second wicket from 109 balls before the latter was trapped leg before by Jansen in his 22nd over.

India will be desperate to start well in the 50-over leg of the all-format series after being whitewashed by the Proteas in two Test matches. The One-Day Internationals will be followed by five Twenty20 games. A strong start in the ODIs will be crucial for restoring the team’s confidence. The second and third ODIs will be held in Raipur (December 3) and Visakhapatnam (December 6).
