Rohit Sharma’s time as India’s captain has officially ended after he was replaced as ODI skipper ahead of the Australia series. The 37-year-old recently guided India to a Champions Trophy win earlier this year, but the selectors have now handed the leadership role to Shubman Gill, keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.

The end of a glorious chapter in Indian cricket is the ousting of Rohit as ODI captain. He retired after the T20 title by taking India to the 2024 championship. His Test captaincy career was also cut short later in the year as he stepped down of the format earlier this year and his format leadership career ended.

Rohit was the captain of India in 56 ODIs and had a reputation of a calm yet aggressive style of leadership during his rule. His leadership had encouraged the team to go out with no fear of playing cricket and his performance at the bat was usually the order of the day. When he steps down, there are inevitable comparisons between the ODI performance of Rohit and those of the previous captain Rahul Dravid.
