Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI captain ahead of the upcoming tour of Australia. The Men in Blue will play three ODIs, starting on October 19.
Gill takes over from Rohit Sharma, who stepped down from the role. He had earlier replaced Rohit as Test captain during the England tour, where he performed well as both captain and batter. India managed to level the Test series 2-2, with Gill finishing as the leading run-scorer.
At 26, Gill is also the vice-captain of India’s T20I team. His first ODI series as captain will be overseas, similar to his Test debut as leader, marking the start of a new era in Indian cricket with him leading the team.
3. Ensuring to maintain India’s dominance in ODI cricket
Rohit Sharma had an outstanding record as ODI captain, leading India in 56 matches with 42 wins and a win rate of 75%. Under his leadership, India won the 2023 Asia Cup, remained unbeaten in the 2023 World Cup except for the final, and also won the 2025 Champions Trophy without losing a game.
Shubman Gill now faces the challenge of keeping India’s ODI dominance intact. As a young leader, he will need to maintain the team’s winning momentum and ensure that India stays at the top of the ICC ODI rankings in the coming years.
2. Leading seniors like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
Shubman Gill will also face the second obstacle of headship of senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who are still in the ODI team to the Australia series. Handling ex-captains and stars of his team will also challenge his leadership abilities as he has to work through the team dynamics.
Gill has worked with large brands in the IPL working with Gujarat Titans, however international cricket will be accompanied by greater levels of stakes and pressure. He has to gain the respect of older players and still establish his position as a captain.

The biggest challenge that Gill will face upon becoming the new ODI captain of India is to prepare the team to take part in the world cup 2027. He will have to put the emphasis on the balance of the team, as to choose the appropriate mix of batters, all-rounders, and bowlers to be competitive in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Gill will also be required to liaise with selectors and management in order to seek new talent and fill in gaps, particularly in the pace attack and all-rounder selections to ensure that the team is well-equipped to go into the prestigious tournament.
