Suryakumar Yadav vs Rohit Sharma - Comparing their captaincy stats

Suryakumar Yadav will be captaining the Men in Blue at the T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. The co-hosts are clubbed in Group A of the tournament. They start with a game against United States at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7. Group A also includes Pakistan, Netherlands and Namibia.

India’s second group encounter will be against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on February 12. India were set to play Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 15. But it was unclear if the match would be played. India’s final group game will be against Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 18.

India are the reigning T20 world champions. They emerged champions in the West Indies and United States in 2024 under Rohit Sharma. We take a look at Suryakumar’s vs Rohit’s numbers as T20I captain ahead of the next edition.

1. Suryakumar Yadav vs Rohit Sharma - Who has a higher win percentage as T20I captain?

Suryakumar has captained Team India in 43 T20I games thus far. Under him, Men in Blue have won 32 games and lost seven matches. Two matches ended in ties, two were no results. Suryakumar enters T20 World Cup with a win percentage of 74.41.

Under Rohit, Team India played 62 T20I games. The Men in Blue won 49 and lost 12 under his captaincy with one match ending as a tie. India didn’t lose a game on route to their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. They won all of their matches while one Match against Canada was abandoned. Rohit’s T20I captaincy average was a brilliant 79.03, an excellent note to sign off on as skipper.

2. Suryakumar Yadav vs Rohit Sharma: Who holds a better record with the bat as T20I captain?

As captain, Suryakumar has amassed 990 runs in 43 T20Is (40 innings) at an average of 28.28 and a strike rate of 160.19 including one hundred and seven fifties. His highest, an 100 off 56 balls against South Africa in Johannesburg in December 2023, included seven fours and eight sixes. The 35-year-old had also struck 82* off 37 balls against New Zealand in Raipur in January 2026.

In 62 T20Is as captain, Rohit tallied 1,905 runs at an average of 34.01 and a strike rate of 149.76, including three hundreds and 13 half-centuries. The Hitman’s 121* came off 69 balls vs Afghanistan in Bengaluru in January 2024, and it included help from 11 fours and eight maximums. He also hit 118 off 43 against Sri Lanka in Indore (December, 2017) and 111* off 61 balls against West Indies in Luckhnow (November,2018).

In 32 matches India won under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, he scored 804 runs at an average of 30.92 and a strike rate of 169.26, including one century and six fifties. In contrast, across seven defeats, he managed 127 runs at an average of 18.14 with a strike rate of 130.92. Additionally, Suryakumar scored 20 runs in two tied games and added an unbeaten 39 from two matches that officials abandoned without a ball bowled.

Meanwhile, in 49 T20Is India won under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, he amassed 1,572 runs at an average of 35.72 and a strike rate of 152.03, with two hundreds and 12 fifties. In 12 losses, Rohit scored 212 runs at an average of 17.66 and a strike rate of 125.44, including one fifty. He also piled up 121 runs in a T20I that ended in a tie.
