In match number 16 of the current IPL 2025, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) took on the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Mumbai’s Hardik Pandya decided to field first after winning the toss.

With openers Mitchell Marsh (60 runs off 31 balls) and Aiden Markram (53 runs off 38 balls) scoring impressive half-centuries, Lucknow got off to a great start at bat. David Miller and Ayush Badoni both contributed crucial cameos, scoring 27(14) and 30(19), respectively.

Hardik showcased his excellence as the top bowler for MI through his impressive five-wicket haul. LSG ultimately registered 203/8 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav outshone all batters in the match to become Mumbai’s top scorer with his 67 runs earned from 43 balls and Naman Dhir stabilized the team with 46 runs off 24 balls.

The five-time champions were defeated by 12 runs, reaching 191/5 after 20 overs, with Hardik remaining undefeated at 28 in 16 balls. Digvesh Rathi, a leg spinner, had an outstanding performance, bowling figures of 4-0-21-1.

Mumbai is sagging in seventh place in the IPL 2025 points standings following just one victory from the first four games. However, with two wins and an equal number of losses, Lucknow is in sixth place.

Here, we examine three situations from the LSG vs. MI game that caused fans to talk.

1. Hardik Pandya Creates History With Best Bowling Figures by an IPL Captain

Hardik Pandya got two wickets his first two overs, Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians

Mumbai’s Hardik Pandya took the lead and played admirably with the ball. The talismanic all-rounder took five wickets and gave up 36 runs in his four overs.

He fired Akash Deep, David Miller, Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, and Aiden Markram. With his spell, Hardik became the first skipper in league history to take five wickets, leaving his mark on history.

Despite recording his highest bowling numbers in T20 cricket history, the 31-year-old’s efforts were in vain as his team lost yet another match.

2. Tilak Varma gets retired out by MI ahead of the final over

Tilak Varma took his time to get going, Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians

Tilak Varma, a batsman for MI, had trouble getting going during the run chase. Despite facing 23 balls, the southpaw scored 25 runs with a lackluster strike rate of 108.70.

When MI needed 24 runs off seven balls, Varma was strategically retired out before the final ball of the 19th over. It is important to note that this was only the fourth time in IPL history that a batter was retired.

After Varma returned to the pavilion, Mitchell Santner took over at the crease and completed with two runs off of as many deliveries.

3. LSG spinner Digvesh Rathi bowls tidy spell and brings back notebook celebration

Digvesh Rathi pulls out his notebook celebration

Digvesh Rathi, the leg spinner for LSG, had a clean spell during the match. He took the well-set Naman Dhir’s vital wicket. It’s interesting to observe that he revived the notebook celebration following the wicket.

After dismissing Priyansh Arya of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the previous game for LSG, the bowler gave him a similar farewell. Because of his acts, he was penalized 25% of his match fees.

Rathi’s outstanding bowling performances earned him the Player of the Match award following LSG’s 12-run victory over MI.
