Fans throng near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025, to celebrate a day after the victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 final cricket match.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 completed after more than two months of cricket, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally breaking their 17-year trophy drought to win the title on Tuesday night. However, the triumph celebration in Bengaluru on Wednesday turned tragic as a stampede killed 11 people.

The Garden City had an amazing turnout, with lakhs of fans converging on the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and surrounding roadways to rejoice with their beloved club. The size of the gathering made the city’s police force ineffective and difficult to maintain order.

Despite attempts by law authorities to disperse and regulate the throng, many surged against the stadium’s admission gates, desperate to see the players. The turbulent situations swiftly deteriorated, resulting in a tragic stampede.

The RCB expressed tremendous regret for the occurrence, as well as indignation and disappointment with how events proceeded. They highlighted how important the safety and well-being of fans and the general public are. The franchise described the situation as terrible and offered genuine condolences to the families of those involved.

“We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.”

Several players from the world of cricket took to social media to lament the incident and the deaths it caused. The outpouring of grief was similar to the amazing reception given to India’s World Cup winners in Mumbai last year.
