On Sunday, November 30, 2014, Team India won by 17 runs in the first One-Day International in the Ranchi JSCA International Stadium. This made the hosts take an early lead of 1-0 in three matches of the One Day International series.
India, batting first, put a mammoth 349/8 on the board in 50 overs courtesy Virat Kohli’s brilliant century (135). Rohit Sharma (57), KL Rahul (62) and Ravindra Jadeja (32) also chipped in with the bat for him.

South Africa got off to a slow start, and lost their top order very early; they were at 11/3 after 4.4 overs. But Matthew Breetzke (72), Marco Jansen (70) and Corbin Bosch (67) hit back with half-centuries to keep the South African chase in the game. Their efforts proved in vain as South Africa came up 18 runs short.
The high scoring first ODI match had fans entertained, who expressed their joy and humor through some hilarious memes on X. Here are the best ones:

At the post-match presentation, South Africa captain Aiden Markram reflected on the loss, saying:
“Really proud of the effort! We never lost the belief! The top-order failed, and that pushed us back. But still felt that that chasing was the better thing to do. The top-order needs to do better, surely. We also have to improve in the field.”
He said:
“On the whole, we got close, but should have been more clinical. Any team will like to bat as deep as possible, and both Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch help us do that really well! We want them to keep going in this way with the bat!”

The second ODI will take place on Wednesday (December 3) at Raipur’s Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium.
