Usman Khawaja, an experienced Australian hitter, announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday, January 2. The last Ashes Test of 2025-26, which begins on January 4 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), will be the batter’s farewell game for Australia. In January 2011, the southpaw made his Test debut at the same location against the same opposition.

The 39-year-old suffered two dismissals in the first Ashes 2025–26 Test in Perth. Back spasms then ruled him out of the Brisbane Test. Australia initially left Khawaja out of the playing XI in Adelaide but recalled him after Steve Smith withdrew due to vertigo. He responded with scores of 82 and 40 in that Test, before enduring a difficult Boxing Day Test, where he managed 29 and a duck.

Following Khawaja’s announcement of his retirement from international cricket, we compare his Test record with that of Rohit Sharma. Rohit also played 67 Tests in his career, allowing for a like-for-like comparison with Khawaja after the Australian batter reached the same milestone.

Rohit has scored 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57 in 67 Tests. Of his runs, 1,147 were in 14 Tests against England at an average of 47.79. He also scored 739 runs in 15 Tests against Australia – average 28.82 and 738 runs in 11 Tests against South Africa at an average of 38.84.

In 67 Tests, Usman Khawaja had scored 5,135 runs at an average of 47.54. Of his runs, 1,378 were scored in 19 matches against England at an average of 40.52. The southpaw also made 1,123 runs in nine Tests against Pakistan at an average of 93.58 and 765 runs in 11 matches versus South Africa at an average of 40.26.

Rohit scored 12 hundreds in 67 Tests. His highest score is 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in October 2019. He had also hit 176 & 127 in the Visakhapatnam Test of that series. Rohit’s 161 came against England in Chennai in February 2021. Of his twelve centuries, four were scored against England, three each against South Africa and the West Indies and one each as well against Australia and Sri Lanka.

At the end of 67 Tests, Khawaja counted 15 tons. His previous high at that point was 195*, which he had made against South Africa in Sydney in January, 2023. He also made 174 against New Zealand at Brisbane (November 2015) and 171 against England at Sydney (January 2018). Four of his 15 tons have been against England, three each versus New Zealand and Pakistan and two against South Africa.

Rohit had featured in 36 matches that India won. In victorious causes he scored 2,985 runs at an average of 57.40 and made 12 hundreds and nine half-centuries. In 20 lost Tests for India, he made 744 runs at an average of 18.60 with three fifties. In 11 Tests that were drawn, Rohit scored 572 runs at an average of 40.85 with six half-centuries.

Khawaja won 32 of the Tests he played, after 67 overall. In causes he won, he scored 2712 runs at an average of 53.17 with eight hundreds and 16 half-centuries. In 21 Tests, Australia lost when he was playing, he managed only 1,006 runs at an average of 24.53, and struck seven half-centuries here. In 14 drawn Tests, Khawaja made 1,417 runs at an average of 88.56 with seven centuries and two fifties.

In 31 away Tests, Rohit Sharma amassed 1,644 runs at an average of 31.01 including two centuries and as many half-centuries. In two neutral Tests he had scored 122 at an average of 30.50, and a highest score of 43. And, in 34 home Tests, Rohit compiled 2,535 runs at an average of 51.73 with the help of 10 hundreds and eight fifties.

From his initial 67 Tests, Khawaja featured in 32 away games. In away Tests, he scored 2,266 runs at an average of 40.46 with five hundreds and twelve fifties. The 39-year-old had 242 runs with one century and a half-century in three neutral Test matches, averaging 48.40. In 32 home Tests as well, the left-hander scored 2,627 runs at an average of 55.89 with the help of nine hundreds and 12 fifties.
