Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson in IPL 2024

In a surprising move,Rajasthan Royals (RR) have named star all-rounder Riyan Parag as their captain for IPL 2026. The team officially announced on Friday, February 13.

3. Young age, fresh energy, and a long-term perspective2. Spare Yashasvi Jaiswal the extra baggage of captaincy1. Riyan Parag has captained at the IPL and domestic levels before

Riyan Parag was retained by RR for a whopping ₹14 crore prior to the IPL 2026 mega auction. It’s a different arc for him, having been bought by the franchise first in 2019 for ₹20 lakh only to be retained now (and getting some captaincy duties as well).

He was picked by the Rajasthan Royals in 2019 and played seven matches in his first IPL season. The breakout season for Riyan was in 2024 when he made 573 runs from 14 innings at an average of52.09 and a strike rate of149/21. He has played for RR since his very first IPL match and is one of important members in the side now. In those 84 matches, he has made 1566 runs at an average of 26.10 and a strike rate of 141.84 with seven half-centuries.

That being said, here are three reasons why picking Riyan Parag as their captain for IPL 2026 is the right decision for Rajasthan.

3. Young age, fresh energy, and a long-term perspective

Riyan Parag broke a solid stand

RR were on the lookout for a captain following their trading of Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prior to the auction for IPL 2026. Samson guided the franchise from 2021-25 seasons. Beneath him they made the final once, in 2022, but they were unable to win.

RR presumably have had a lot to give up on their captain and it’s time they get someone new guarded with fresh energy, another young talent who might bring some fresh air in this team which will be the case now due to Riyan Parag. He’s only 24 and can provide a bold injection of energy after Samson’s failed tenure.

And it would also give Rajasthan the option of building the team around him as a future investment, given his age. They could have also gone for seasoned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja but it probably made more sense to go with a young leader after building a new-look team at the 2026 auction.

2. Spare Yashasvi Jaiswal the extra baggage of captaincy

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 70 off 40

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the leading run-scorer of this year’s U-19 WC, was also in conversation to be an option for the RR captaincy. But the franchise might not have liked the prospect of putting Jaiswal under such pressure (of captaincy) and want him to be free from that so that he plays freely at the top, like he has been doing.

With a pup like Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the other opener, who will be featuring in his second IPL season, it would mean more responsibilities at the top for Jaiswal.

RR could have also travelled to all-rounder Sam Curran who was traded in and then out from CSK for Samson. Curran has also headed the IPL in the past. But as a new-look team, inserting and immediately naming captain someone who was not part of that also may not have been the best move.

1. Riyan Parag has captained at the IPL and domestic levels before

Dhruv Jurel has a laugh with Riyan Parag after taking the catch of Ajinkya Rahane

When Sanju Samson keeled for a few games last season and played as an impact sub later in the tournament because of niggles, Riyan Parag was handed the responsibility.

He captained RR in eight matches in IPL 2025! It’s not going to be hard as Riyan led the team last year, so being a captain is nothing new for him and he knows how this team functions, what the setup is like and nature/world of the franchise.

Also for the uninitiated, even Riyan has experience of leading at domestic level. He has led Assam in all formats in domestic cricket, the T20 format being his first appointment as captain, which came in 2021.
