India plays Zimbabwe next in Super 8 of T20 world cup 2026 on Thursday, 26th February in Chennai. It is a do or die situation to the Men in Blue in order to stay in the field of competing to make it into the semifinals.
India had lost their inaugural Super 8 game to South Africa. Also it was a massive loss since they were beaten by 76 runs. The qualification scenario is in a problematic situation when it comes to Suryakumar Yadav and his troops. Their net turnover decreased to -3.80 and South Africa +3.80 and the West Indies +5.35 are miles ahead in the same category.
To see the Men in Blue through, it will not only require them to win their remaining matches, but they will need to hope that South Africa also wins their remaining matches.
With the all-important Super 8 match against Zimbabwe, three substitutions that India might implement in their playing XI are listed below.
1. Tilak Varma has been replaced by Kuldeep Yadav.

Tilak Varma, a left-handed batter, has not fared off well in the T20 World Cup 2026 so far. He has played five games in the third position, and has only managed to get 107 runs with an average of 21.4 and a dismal strike rate of 118.88.
Since India will play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, a place that is suited to spinners, they might resort to the option of bringing in a wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep has only one match in the tournament that was against Pakistan. But he made 1/14 off three overs impressively. He is a true wicket-taker who has 95 scalps in 54 T20Is at an average of 13.74 and economy rate of 6.95.
Under good conditions, Kuldeep may turn out to be a trump card against batters of Zimbabwe.
2. Axar Patel in the case of Washington Sundar.

India had opted not to keep star all-rounder Axar Patel out against South Africa and instead play Washington Sundar. Sundar has not been convincing in two games already. He has not mined a single wicket and has even bowled only two overs against the Proteas. In the previous game, Sundar was at the number five position and he only had 11 runs.
They should recall Axar Patel into the playing XI in a very crucial match, who is also the deputy captain of the team. He has been big with the ball during this tournament picking up six wickets in three matches.
Axar is sure to get his four overs and also he is a more dependable middle order batter. This was definitely felt when he was not there when the team failed against South Africa under pressure.
1. Sanju Samson for Rinku Singh

Rinku Singh has abandoned the India team, on Tuesday, February 24, due to family emergency. His role in the match with Zimbabwe is questionable. Under this situation, where Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma are not firing at the top, Men in Blue may consider introducing Sanju Samson.
Further, Rinku, who has been batting late in the order has not been an effective finisher. He has only made 24 out of five matches and his strike rate is 82.75. Samson batted Namibia, and demonstrated good intentions, with 22 runs off eight balls.
Samson could open the bat with Abhishek and Ishan Kishan could be placed at the third position which will also boost the batting during a must-win game.
