The close win of England over New Zealand in Colombo has provided Pakistan with a lifeline in the T20 World Cup 2026. What was a near-certain way out only 24 hours ago has now become a realistically viable way to the semi-finals of the team led by Salman Ali Agha.
In the R. Premadasa Stadium, the scores of New Zealand were 159/7 when they chose to be the first to bat, whose innings never really gathered pace even with good support by their batters. The spinners of England under the command of Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed went through the middle overs, making sure that the Black Caps ended up with the lowest possible score in the tournament.
In the retaliation England lost Phil Salt and Jos Buttler, and at 117/6 in the 17th over, the chase seemed miles off them. However, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed put 44 runs off only 16 balls on Glenn Phillips, demolishing him in an over of 22 and leaving the clean-up with three balls to go. England emerged the victor by four wickets thus their Super 8 stage remained unbeaten and thus they became the semi-finalists.

It was worth noting that New Zealand was on three points rather than five after being defeated. With a victory of the Black Caps, Pakistan would have been eliminated. Rather, the defeat has made Pakistan survive the competition.
Pakistan’s qualification scenario

Pakistan is now on one point following a washout with New Zealand and a loss to England. New Zealand is on three points and this means that Pakistan will have to defeat Sri Lanka in their last Super 8 match in Pallekele to even the points. Nevertheless, that will not be sufficient since Net Run Rate (NRR) will determine who will accompany England to the semi-finals of the Group 2.
Scenario 1:
In the event that Pakistan is the first to bat, then they have to win by at least 64 runs over Sri Lanka.
Scenario 2:
When the Sri Lanka is to bat first then Pakistan has to hit the target within 13.1 overs or less. Any less than that and New Zealand will move to the semi-finals.
