India's Rohit Sharma (R) gestures next to Virat Kohli during day five of the third cricket Test match

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of Team India, has stated that everyone should respect Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s choice to retire from Test cricket prior to the England tour. The veterans’ decision to retire during a crucial period of change compelled the think group to seek solutions for the 2025–2027 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli didn’t perform well in their previous Test tour in Australia during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar series. The skipper was not chosen for the Sydney Test after managing just 31 runs throughout the first three matches. When Kohli made his century in the opening match, he found it hard to overcome the threat of the Australian pacers.

According to Gautam Gambhir, retiring is an entirely personal choice that shouldn’t be influenced in any manner.

“I think, when you start the game and when you want to finish, it’s a very individual decision. No one has the right. Be it the coach, the selector, be it anyone in this country has any right to tell someone when to retire and when not to retire. So it comes from within.”

Team India is looking for a new red-ball captain and a middle-order talisman after the loss of the two mainstays. based on reports. Given Jasprit Bumrah’s workload worries, Shubman Gill is most likely to take over as captain.

The majority believed that Team India required Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s vital experience in tough English conditions for the crucial series, which might set the tone for the WTC season.

However, Gambhir believes that their absence presents a chance for a new player to assume that duty.

“We’ve got to be without two senior players to really experience players. And sometimes I believe that it’s the opportunity for some other people to put their hand up and say, Okay, I’m ready for it. So yes, it will be tough, but then there’ll be people putting their hand up for sure because this question was asked to me before. Champions Trophy as well.”

“When Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t there and I said exactly the same thing, someone missing out might give another person an opportunity to do something special for the country, hopefully, there’ll be other guys waiting for that opportunity.”
