Shubman Gill, Team India’s skipper, struck a remarkable double century in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. India was given the opportunity to bat first after the hosts won the toss, but the visiting captain’s outstanding innings disproved that decision.

Shubman Gill, who came in at number four, scored 269 runs off 387 balls. He hit three sixes and thirty fours in his incredible knock. With 147 runs in the first innings in the first Test, he had also amassed a huge score. He went on to make his first double hundred in Test cricket in addition to supporting it with another ton here.

On that subject, here are five records/milestones set by Shubman Gill during his sensational 269-run innings in the second Test against England.

1. Second youngest to score a double hundred as Indian Test captain

Shubman Gill scored his first Test double-century

Shubman Gill broke the record of being the second youngest Indian to score a double hundred as a Test captain. Through the age of 25 years and 298 days, he was able to make the feat. This surpassed Gill in overtaking Sachin Tendulkar (26 years 189 days, against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 1999), and Virat Kohli (27 years and 260 days, against West Indies at North Sound in 2016).

On the list, Gill is only surpassed by Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. At the age of 23 years and 39 days, MAK Pataudi defeated England in Delhi in 1964 to become the youngest Indian skipper to make a double hundred.

2. Second double hundred by an Indian captain in overseas Tests

Shubman Gill became only the second Indian skipper to make a double century in international Tests. In the current Test match against England, Gill reached his double hundred after 311 balls.

He became one of only a few Indian captains to reach a double hundred in Test matches played abroad, along with Virat Kohli. at 2016, Kohli made 200 runs at North Sound against the West Indies.

3. Highest score by an Indian batter in England in Tests

Shubman Gill scored his first Test double-century

Shubman Gill’s stunning 269-run knock is the best individual score by an Indian hitter in Tests in England. He surpassed the record-holding 221 at The Oval in 1979 set by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

On the list, the other two Indian batters are Rahul Dravid (217 in 2022 at The Oval) and Sachin Tendulkar (193 in 2002 at Leeds) and Ravi Shastri (187 in 1990 at The Oval). Gill also becomes the first Indian to score 150 and plus score at Edgbaston in the Test.

4. Highest score by an Asian captain in SENA Tests

Captain Shubman Gill has an Asian captain best individual score in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) Tests, too. It surpassed the record score of 193 by Tillakaratne Dilshan in 2011 at Lord, the best score by a batsman.

Additionally, Gill became just the third visiting skipper in England’s Test history to score 250 or more. He became the first and only Indian to do so, joining Bob Simpson and Graeme Smith (twice) on the list.

5. Highest score by an Indian captain in Tests

Shubman Gill’s 269 off 387 balls is also the best individual score by an Indian skipper in Test cricket. On the list, he passed former Indian captain Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli, with a not-out score of 254 during his match against South Africa in 2019 in Pune, previously was the owner of the record. Gill thus became the sixth Indian captain to achieve a double hundred in Test cricket, that list makes a favourite caste with Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.
