English star batter, Joe Root once more displayed his class in Test match. The world class player is a modern day great and showed it with a brilliant hundred on day three of the fourth test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Root made the most of the fine batting conditions and a weary Indian bowling and hit a massive hundred. He scored 150 runs with the help of 248 balls. His large stay comprised 14 boundaries and he played the game mainly with courage and concentration at the crease.

His amazing performance made the whole stadium including his team mates stand up to applaud him. India had been called to open the batting and made 358. To that response, Root was instrumental in ensuring England surpassed the 500-run mark and create a huge advantage. At stumps they were close to being a match stronger at 544 for 7, with a lead of 186.

As a result of his ton, he set numerous records and milestones, which are listed below:

1. Fourth most Test hundreds

Joe Root’s ton was his 38th in Tests. The right-hander is tied with former Sri Lanka captain and legend Kumar Sangakkara for the most Test hundreds, ranking joint-fourth.

Sangakkara scored 38 Test hundreds in 134 matches and 233 innings, whilst Root needed 157 matches and 286 innings to reach the mark. The English hitter presently trails only Ricky Ponting (41 hundreds), Jacques Kallis (45 hundreds), and Sachin Tendulkar (51 hundreds).

2. Joint most hundreds in home Tests

Joe Root has already scored 23 hundreds out of 38 in England. He became one of the few to score his 23 rd test hundred at home, thus joining Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Mahela Jayawardene as the club members.

He and Ponting, Kallis, and Jayawardene now hold the record of the highest Test centuries at home making these four players have 23 Test tons at home with both Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

3. Most Test hundreds against an opponent at home

Joe Root has now scored nine Test hundreds against India in England. These are the most runs scored by a hitter against a single opponent in home Test matches. He beat the renowned Sir Don Bradman to set this record.

Bradman scored eight Test hundreds against England in Australia. Furthermore, Root surpassed Steve Smith in terms of Test hundreds against India, with 12 tons. Only Sunil Gavaskar (13 tons against the West Indies) and Don Bradman (19 tons against England) have scored more Test hundreds against the same opponent.

4. First batter with 1000-plus Test runs at Manchester

Joe Root became the first batsmen in the history of the game to get 1,000 runs in Test matches at the Old Trafford in Manchester. He has scored 1128 runs now in this ground in 12 Test appearances and 20 innings. He has scored two centuries and seven half-centuries there at an average of 70.50.

He even managed to be the third England batsman to have passed 1,000 runs in two different test capacity venues. In addition to his glory at Old Trafford, Root has also attained over 1, 000 runs in Test, in the iconic Lord Cricket Ground.

5. Joe Root is the second-highest run-getter in Tests

Joe Root has risen to be the second-highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket surpassing both Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting. Kallis finished his career scoring 13,289 runs whereas Ponting made 13,378 runs.

Root has 13,409 runs against his name now in 157 Test matches and 286 innings, with this phenomenal success. He is now only lagging behind the world record holder in this category Sachin Tendulkar, whop is at the top of the list after scoring 15, 921 runs in 200 tests and 329 innings.
