Rohit Sharma of India speaks to teammate Shubman Gill during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Shubman Gill has recently told that he was aware in advance before official announcement that he would be the new captain of India in the ODI matches. He disclosed this in a press meet before the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi. Gill added that he had heard about the decision before the word of Rohit Sharma being removed as captain was circulated.

Gill now heads the Indian Test and has recently been crowned captain of the team as they started to play the England series at the beginning of the year which was tied in a draw. India is leading West Indies 1-0 in the current Test series under his leadership. His initial ODI as captain will be against Australia on October 19 and he will be accompanied by relative seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer will be his vice-captain.

“Yes, it was announced in the middle of the first Test match but I got to know a little before that. It obviously is a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. So, very excited to lead my country in the ODI format,” Gill told the media.

The previous six months have been nothing short of a whirlwind for the Punjab native, whose cricket career has undergone a stunning rise. The 25-year-old is still grounded in spite of the increased attention and expectations. Gill stressed that he is focused on preserving continuity and helping the squad advance across forms rather than getting swept up in the success.

“The last few months have been very exciting for me. But I’m really looking forward to what the future has. I want to stay as present as possible and don’t really want to look back on what I’ve been able to achieve or what we as a team have been able to achieve. Just want to look forward and win everything that we have in the upcoming months,” the cricketer said further.

Replacing such an experienced leader as Rohit Sharma is never an easy task, yet Gill is hardly bothered by legacy due to his initial statements and composed demeanor. Suryakumar Yadav has already shown the leadership qualities of a mature person with the experience of his leadership role as the vice-captain of the team during the successful Asia Cup 2025 India run. It may not take long before the 26 year old becomes the all format Indian captain because of the growing influence in the different forms and the amiable but dominant manner on and off the field.
