D.K. Shivakumar, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, has stated that Indian Premier League (IPL) matches will continue to be played at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He confirmed that all IPL 2026 matches would take place at the venue as planned. Shivakumar made the statement at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, December 7, after voting in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections.
When asked about concerns about the potential relocation of important matches, including IPL games, following the recent tragedy at the RCB victory party, he flatly denied any such possibility. He also reacted to questions about hosting matches for the next Women’s T20 World Cup, stating that the state government and authorities will assure complete preparation and security for all big cricket events.
“This is a matter of respect for the state of Karnataka and Bengaluru. We will take steps to ensure that the next IPL matches are held here. We will allow whatever matches are available in the coming days,” said Shivakumar as quoted by Tribune.
Cricket enthusiast Shivakumar has said that the stadium is ready to host major matches. He mentioned that the government plans to construct a new, larger cricket stadium in Bengaluru to meet future infrastructure requirements and help manage crowds better.
Shivakumar vows safer, upgraded Chinnaswamy as Bengaluru keeps IPL 2026.

It was the first IPL title victory for RCB in 17 years, and Chinnaswamy Stadium witnessed a record turnout. However, overcrowding, poor planning, and insufficient warnings turned the celebration into a disaster, resulting in several deaths and injuries.
“I am a member of the KSCA. When I was young, Nagaraj gave me a membership. His son is my classmate. I know many people from Brijesh Patel, including Anil Kumble and Prasanna. I voted for the ones I wanted,” said Shivakumar.
“I am a cricket fan. We will take care that the recent disaster does not happen again and ensure that the stadium’s dignity remains. The stadium will be developed by managing the crowd within the legal framework. In addition, we will build a bigger stadium as an alternative,” he added.

The IPL 2026 auction is scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi on December 16, marking the third successive year that the event will not take place in India. Unlike mega auctions, the 2026 edition will operate in a mini-auction format and is likely to be concluded in one day. Ahead of the auction, the defending champions have made key releases, parting ways with England all-rounder Liam Livingstone, who struggled to get regular game time in the side.
RCB has also released South African pacer Lungi Ngidi, who was mostly used as a reserve last season. Additionally, wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert of New Zealand and Zimbabwe quick Blessing Muzarabani have been let go as the franchise rejigs its overseas lineup for the upcoming season.
