Gautam Gambhir, Head Coach of India looks on during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of team India has shown that he does not believe in data and other tools of analysis as far as preparation of opponents is concerned. The India former opener clarified that he follows his gut and attempts to share his experience with playing the game with Suryakumar Yadav.

On Sunday, March 1, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India won the West Indies by five wickets to move to the semifinals of T20 World Cup in 2026. The Men in Blue pursued a goal of 196 and completed the task in 19.2 overs with the help of 97 star of Sanju Samson using 50 balls.

The post-match press conference asked Gambhir the extent to which he trusted information in terms of planning the game. The Indian coach responded:

“I don’t believe in data honestly. I have never seen data. I don’t even know what data is all about. I feel T20 cricket is more about instinct and backing your instinct as well. Whatever knowledge I have about the game and the T20 format, I give it to the captain and try to help him out as much as I can. But ultimately, it’s the captain that takes the final call.”

On Sunday India was bowling unusually against the West Indies. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya started with the bowling, and the left arm spinner Axar Patel bowled two overs in the powerplay. The main pacer Jasprit Bumrah only bowled one out of the six initial overs.

When asked if he believes Team India is peaking at the proper time, Gambhir ridiculed the notion, claiming that he does not believe in it. The former India batter believes that in a short event like the T20 World Cup, it is critical to strive and win every game. He commented:

“Look, I don’t believe in all this peaking at the right time. You got to win every game that you represent your country in. There is nothing sort of peaking at the right time. It’s a short tournament that comes and goes very quickly, so you’ve got to try and play your A game every time.”
