Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir described two fours of Shivam Dube as significant as the 97/ of Sanju Samson in a T20 World Cup 2026 match between Team India and the West Indies. Gambhir states that it is small contributions that are as important as big knocks in a cricketing game.

On Sunday, March 1, India defeated the West Indies by 5 wickets in the final Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026 in the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Team India was also qualified in the semifinals of the ICC event with the victory. Following an aim of 196, Samson made the top score of 97 with 50 balls. Last to come in, Dube also had two fours to end with eight not out in four balls.

In a post-match press conference, Gambhir concurred with one of the observations that although Sanju Samson had played a special knock, the victory over West Indies could not have been secured without some of the minor ones. He commented:

“He [Samson] played a special innings, but those small contributions actually help you win games as well,” Gambhir went on to add.

Chasing 196, India lost Hardik Pandya for 17 off 14 in the penultimate over, bowled by Shamar Joseph. However, Dube came in and relieved Samson’s pressure by hitting two boundaries in three balls.

“They are a world-class team. They have got a lot of quality players as well and we all know that Wankhede is a tough venue. Hopefully, we can turn up. It’s another opportunity to do something special for the team, for the country. Hopefully, we can keep ticking all the boxes, which is going to be important because we will need a special effort to beat a quality side like England.”
