Kolkata Knight Riders' Varun Chakravarthy (R) bowls during the Indian Premier League

Varun Chakravarthy, a spinner for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was fined 25% of his match money and given one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct in Match 57 of the 2025 IPL against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens on May 7, 2025. Citing a Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 of the Code—which covers words, gestures, or acts aimed at a dismissed batter that have the potential to incite an aggressive response—the IPL confirmed the fine.

While the IPL statement did not explain on the precise situation, Chakravarthy’s offense was evident when he disqualified CSK’s Dewald Brevis and sent him off.

In the match, choosing to bat first, KKR got their powerplay right, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sunil Narine, and Ajinkya Rahane giving them quick starts, converting 67 for one in six powerplay overs. Slowish middle-overs due to the spinners made it difficult For CSK to chase the target of 180, but they failed to capitalize on the powershot start given by Ruturaj Gaikwad to achieve the target of 180 set by KKR.

CSK lost five wickets in the PowerPlay, including debutant Urvil Patel, who had put on 31 off just 11 balls, as their pursuit got off to a bad start. With the bat, though, Brevis was the standout player. Brevis hit Vaibhav Arora for 30 runs in the eleventh over. KKR had a victory probability of more than 78% prior to that over. It was CSK who took the initiative after that.

KKR were unable to recover after Chakravarthy dismissed Brevis in the 13th over. In order to come closer to the mark, MS Dhoni hit a six off the first ball of the last over after Shivam Dube performed a vital innings. After that, Anshul Kamboj completed CSK’s first successful chase of 180 or more runs since 2018 with a boundary over mid-on.

KKR now have a total of 11 points in 12 games, which makes them the sixth team in the points list. To be alive for the play-offs, they need to win next two games against SRH and RCB, and other factors should go in their favour.
