India head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing mounting criticism after the team’s 30-run defeat to South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Reports suggest that the BCCI is unhappy with Gambhir’s post-match comments defending the pitch conditions rather than addressing India’s poor batting display. Although no formal action has been taken yet, his tenure is believed to be under close scrutiny, with the 2026 T20 World Cup at home seen as a decisive test for his future.
The loss in Kolkata marked India’s third consecutive home Test series defeat, a worrying trend for a team once considered nearly unbeatable on home soil. The Eden Gardens surface, made up of black soil, drew attention for its uneven bounce and turn, which led to India being bundled out for just 93 runs in the final innings.
His vocal defence of the surface has not gone over well with BCCI authorities, particularly in light of India’s red-ball performance.

According to NDTV, the BCCI is dissatisfied with Gambhir’s comments at the news conference. His comments were deemed needless at a time when fans and experts were already pointing out the team’s weaknesses and lack of temperament against spin and bounce.
“The BCCI is not exactly pleased with India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s forthright comments on the Kolkata pitch following the team’s recent Test defeat to South Africa, even as the board stops short of taking any immediate action. Sources indicate that while Gambhir is likely to remain in charge for now due to a “lack of alternatives”, his position could come under scrutiny later this year, particularly if India underperforms in the T20 World Cup at home,” the report read.
BCCI to conduct performance review with Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar

According to sources referenced in publications, Gambhir will remain coach for the time being due to a lack of options, although his position is not entirely secure. The board is set to undertake a performance evaluation with Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar following the South Africa white-ball series.
It is interesting to note that the BCCI has added that the future of Gambhir largely relies on the performance of India in the 2026 T20 World Cup which will be held in their own country. Although the team is not performing well in the Tests, the head coach is still admired because of his white balls performance that made him a champion of Trophy and Asia cup. Failure in the T20 world cup may however force the board to rethink his tenure.
