India will open their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the United States of America on February 7, 2026, at Mumbai’s legendary Wankhede Stadium. India and Sri Lanka will co-host the 20-team competition, which will run from February 7 to March 8.

The Men in Blue are placed in Group A with Pakistan, Namibia, United States and the Netherlands. India are the defending champions, having secured the T20 World Cup in 2024 by beating South Africa in a final played in the Caribbean and USA. They will be hungry for a third T20 World Cup title, especially in their own backyard.

Suryakuma Yadav of India during a warm up match between India and South Africa prior to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in his maiden world cup, and the hosts would ideally want to mark their start here on a good note at one of the venues that has seen mixed results for T20 internationals. India has played total of five T20Is in Wankhede Stadium and have won four games while lost two matches.

The latter T20I match at the venue was that between India and England in 2010, which India won 150 (55 balls) runs by Abhishek Sharma. India beat Sri Lanka by 2 runs in the year of 2023, and Shivam Mavi led them on with his four wickets.

India’s Virat Kohli (L) and Rohit Sharma bump their fists during the first one-day international (ODI) cricket match

In 2019, India won by 67 runs, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul all scoring half-centuries. Earlier, they had beaten Sri Lanka by five wickets in 2017. However, the other T20 defeat they suffered came in the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final, where they lost by seven wickets to the West Indies.

With disappointment cases behind them, India will be wishing not to repeat the same experience of 2016 and to have a great opening to their 2026 world cup campaign at the Wankhede.
