Quinton De Kock of Kolkata Knight Riders leaves the field after being dismissed during the 2025 IPL match

South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has been released by Kolkata Knight Riders prior to the auction of IPL 2026. The transfer was a part of a large-scale squad change that also included the departure of such players as Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Moeen Ali, and Anrich Nortje. Mayank Markande was sold to another franchise, and this was an indication that KKR is planning to restructure their team by adopting a new strategy into the following season.

1. Sunrisers Hyderabad2. Delhi Capitals3. Kolkata Knight Riders

De Kock, KKR paid 3.60 crore to purchase him at the time of the 2025 mega auction, but had an uneven season. He scored 152 out of 8 matches with 21.71 average and 129.91 strike rate. He was at his best against Rajasthan Royals that he hit an unbroken 97 out of 61 balls with a show of his style and strength in hitting. But lack of consistency in the remainder of the season got him released.

De Kock is also one of the most seasoned openers in the tournament with more than 3,300 IPL runs in 115 matches. His aggressive bating behaviour and keeping abilities can ensure his worthiness and many teams seeking a top-order batter and quality keeper will want him to bid in the IPL 2026 auction. Such a team as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants might become a serious rival of his signature.

1. Sunrisers Hyderabad

Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan brought up a fifty-run stand off 22 balls, Lucknow Super Giants vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad already have an already established open pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, but their performance suffered in the 2025 season. Abhishek was having some good innings and Head was not able to get in rhythm which was placing a burden on other batting unit. This inconsistency cost SRH in a number of matches.

The option of importing Quinton de Kock provides SRH with a good backup strategy. He is able to fit into the 3rd position, stabilize the innings in case of the initial wickets being lost or to continue the pace in case the first innings go off. His aggressive approach would be appropriate in the manner that SRH play their cricket.

SRH stand to take on De Kock without a second thought because they still have ₹25.5 crore in the purse. The experience and versatility would bring a lot of depth to their middle order.

2. Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals’ captain Axar Patel celebrates after taking the wicket

The team of Delhi Capitals began the IPL 2025 with a very strong performance, winning the first 4 games, however, collapsed during the process. Their greatest challenge was late openings in the power play that put the middle order at a strain in some of the games. This significantly contributed to their failure to make it to the playoffs.

DC have Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk availed, and require an experienced attacking opener to complement KL Rahul and Abishek Porel. Someone who is able to establish the atmosphere early on and leave the scoreboard running. De Kock is exactly what that need is because of his aggressive style.

Delhi still have 21.80 crore in their purse and thus they are in a good position to target De Kock. His tenure at the top has the potential to provide DC with the impetus that it was deprived of last season.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders

Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal (2L) shakes hand with Kolkata Knight Riders’ Quinton de Kock (2R) at the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR may have released De Kock, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of buying him back for a better price. They have also let go of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, leaving a clear gap in the wicketkeeper-batter slot. Bringing back De Kock would solve both roles without much adjustment needed.

De Kock has already been a part of KKR during one season, so he is not a complete stranger to the conditions of working in that team. Such familiarity will enable him to settle faster and play at once in the 2026 season. His left-handed opportunity in the top also puts variety to the batting order.

With a huge purse of ₹64.30 crore, KKR have plenty of room to bring in experienced overseas players. De Kock has a strong chance of returning to Kolkata if the franchise decides to rebuild around proven performers.
