A week ago, Punjab Kings, headed by skipper Shreyas Iyer, pulled off a spectacular run-chase against Mumbai Indians in the recently ended Indian Premier League 2025 Qualifier 2. Iyer scored 87* off just 41 balls at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, securing his team’s participation in the Finals, which they ultimately lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on June 3.
After the match versus MI, all of the players exchanged handshakes, with Iyer screaming insults at Shashank Singh while greeting him. Shashank has now disclosed that he was insulted for taking a casual approach in a do-or-die situation, which may have cost them the game. He stated that despite the insults he received from the PBKS skipper, they both went out to supper later.
“I deserve it, Iyer should have slapped me, my father didn’t speak to me till the finals. I was casual, I was walking on the beach not even in the garden. It was a crucial time, Shreyas was clear that I didn’t expect this from you, but later he took me out for dinner.”

Despite Iyer’s criticism, Shashank Singh commended his leadership abilities, saying that there isn’t a finer captain in world cricket right now and that all of the young players feel comfortable around Shreyas in the locker room. Iyer is also not afraid to seek guidance from the proper people, Shashank added.
“Whatever I have spoken to others and seen, there is no better captain than him in current times in world cricket. He gives us freedom, he treats everyone equally. No one will say, Shreyas has an attitude. The youngsters in the dressing room find him to be a chill bandaa (chill guy). Shreyas is the only captain, who has told us that if anyone has any suggestion during the game, he can come and convey it to him. If he feels it’s the right advice, he will take it. It’s rare.”
