India's Ishan Kishan (L) and Abhishek Sharma bump their fists during the 2026 ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup warm-up match

No reasonable cricket fan or expert would have imagined that Abhishek Sharma would still be looking for his first run in the T20 World Cup 2026 after the group round. Given his outstanding form leading up to the ICC event, a number of pundits predicted he would finish as the tournament’s leading run-getter. Cricket, like life, can be unpredictable at times.

The T20 world cup campaign of Abhishek started in a very bad way as the golden duck against USA in Mumbai. He attempted to drive out the first ball of Ali Khan to the boundary, but was caught at deep against him. It predicted the later happenings. Having missed the match with Namibia due to a stomach virus, he scored two more ducks against Pakistan and the Netherlands respectively.

Given Abhishek’s high-risk, high-reward strategy, failing to score is not unusual. In 40 innings, he has already been dismissed for a duck six times. In fact, he started his T20I career with a blob against Zimbabwe before scoring 100 off 47 in the next game. In his brief T20I career, Abhishek’s batting approach has been typified by an all-or-nothing mindset.

Abhishek Sharma’s pattern of dismissals in T20 World Cup a cause for worry?

While analysts agree that Abhishek is destined to have a few bad scores given his ultra-aggressive attitude at the top of the order, the manner in which he was dismissed recently is something that Super 8 teams will keenly scrutinize. Abhishek was killed by off-spin in both Pakistan and the Netherlands after attempting to break free.

The sample size is insufficient to determine that Abhishek Sharma has a difficulty with off-spin. However, it would not be shocking if South Africa opened the innings with an off-spinner in the Super 8 match against the Men in Blue on February 22. The Indian opener will be aware of this technique. Many expert opinions have been exchanged, but the onus is on him to find a way out of this rut.

Team India has not yet reached the point where they need to be concerned about Abhishek’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2026. But another failure will undoubtedly cause serious issues in the Indian camp. The lack of runs from the southpaw has undoubtedly hampered the team’s batting fortunes, with Tilak Varma plainly suffering in the powerplay. Fortunately, nothing catastrophic has occurred thus far.

Ishan Kishan’s stunning resurgence

Whereas Abhishek appears to have been thrown off the boil, at the other extreme we receive Ishan Kishan. At the beginning of the year, the T20 world cup team had no chance that the Jharkhand keeper-batter would make it to its team. Nevertheless, a few fine home performances, coupled with a little bit of luck, provided the southpaw with an opportunity, and the starving cricketer seized it.

After his heroics in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Kishan was selected in the Indian team in T20 India against New Zealand (and the T20 World Cup) as a backup keeper-batter to Sanju Samson. Unless Tilak Varma had been disqualified after undergoing a testicular operation, he would not have even gotten an opportunity to bat in the series. His opportunities to his credit he took by the throat playing some sensational knocks.

This excellent performance by Kishan came at the same time when Sanju Samson lost his form in a shocking manner. Samson appeared completely out of place in the 5 match series of games against New Zealand at home. And thus, prior to the Team India playing their first match in the T20 world cup, it was evident that it was Kishan and not Samson who was to open with Abhishek in the ICC event.

Although Kishan had shown bright forms in the run-up to the T20 world cup, not many would have thought that he would be the top run-getter in the tournament after the group stage was concluded, totally overshadowing Abhishek. However, this is just how it has worked out. Although Abhishek has not scored a run, Kishan has blasted 176 runs at 202.29 strike rate.

Ideally, the Men in Blue would want Kishan and Abhishek to have big hits in the Super 8. With that said, Samson would be secretly hoping that he is given a second opportunity. Taking into account the fact that 2026 has been rather unpredictable to the Indian trio, it would actually not be a good idea to forge what is coming.
