Akash Deep, a pacer for Team India, was the team’s best bowler in the fourth innings of their just finished second Test match against England. In the essay, he claimed six wickets and was instrumental in India’s first Test triumph at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

England had a tough 608-run target. They suffered a crushing 336-run loss after being hustled out for just 271. Akash took five wickets in his first Test match, with scores of 21.1-2-99-6.

The right-arm fast bowler took four wickets in England’s opening innings, which is noteworthy. He emerged as India’s best player with the ball in the pivotal match, finishing the Test with a 10-wicket haul.

“Akash deep is fast becoming fans favourite. Quality hai boss,” wrote former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan.

“India not ‘Gumrah’ without Bumrah. #AkashDeep,” wrote former India batter Sanjay Manrekar.

“Akash Deep is moving it absolutely miles while our bowlers made it look like a runway at Heathrow airport? What is going on,” wrote a fan.

“Akash Deep Has made an amazing comeback in this game. His bowling line and length were amazing in this game. He did not give any chances to england players to stand firm. Congratulations for maiden 5 wickets haul,” remarked a fan.

“Akashdeep. The man. The myth. The legend. I still fail to understand how was he not played in the first test. He had proved himself beyond doubt in the Australian series itself,” chimed in another.

India’s playing XI for the first Test series match at Headingley, Leeds, did not include Akash. The visitors failed to defend a 371-run goal in the last innings and lost by five wickets.

Akash replaced Jasprit Bumrah in the team after the ace quick was rested for the second Test. With his outstanding bowling performance, he took full advantage of the chance and helped India tie the five-match series 1-1.

Akash Deep became the second Indian bowler to take 10 wickets at Edgbaston in Test cricket. With numbers of 4/130 and 6/58 in 1986, former Indian bowler Chetan Sharma was the first to accomplish the feat.

Akash’s Test stats of 4/88 and 6/99 were the best ever recorded by an Indian bowler in England. During the post-match presentation, India captain Shubman Gill praised the seamer’s effort (via Cricbuzz):

“He (Akash Deep) bowled with so much heart. The areas and lengths he hit, he was getting the ball to move both ways. On wickets like these, it’s difficult to do that, he was just magnificent for us.”

India’s victory of 336 runs, meanwhile, is their largest run total away from home. From July 10 to 14, Lord’s in London will host the third Test of India vs. England’s five-match series.
