India's Jasprit Bumrah celebrates after taking the wicket of Pakistan's Saim Ayub during the 2026 ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup group stage match

Jasprit Bumrah first over against Pakistan on Sunday, February 15, was sensational. India’s top speedster allowed 13 runs but took two key wickets in front of a sold-out R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Set a target of 176 runs, India made things happen to render a blistering start as Hardik Pandya sent Sahibzada Farhan back for grand prix off the fourth ball of the innings. Pakistan were under the pump when the Baroda allrounder didn’t concede a single run in his first over.

Jasprit Bumrah, trying to keep the pressure that Hardik had created, began with a short-of-length delivery to Saim Ayub. The young opener charged down the track to slog, but the ball swung away from his arc. Ayub could only manage a top edge, and the ball sailed over third man for a six.

Although such a moment can dent a bowler’s confidence, Bumrah, with his vast experience, knew exactly how to respond. He pitched the next delivery up, and it tailed in late toward Ayub’s pads. The Pakistani opener failed to bring his bat down in time and was struck flush on the front pad, prompting umpire Kumar Dharmasena to raise his finger without hesitation.

Babar Azam then walked in and got off the mark soon after. Pakistan captain Salman Agha struck a boundary but fell on the very next delivery. Attempting to flick a short-of-length ball over mid-wicket, he ended up getting a leading edge. The ball, angling in, popped up toward mid-on, where Hardik moved a few steps back to complete a straightforward catch.
