Mohammed Shami is again in the limelight when he has not been in the Indian team in all formats since the champions trophy in March. His future participation in the national team is doubtful even though he plays frequently in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. The selectors also appear to be favoring the younger fast bowlers, and this has made a comeback by Shami more challenging.
The veteran Bengal pacer has had many injuries throughout the years, the most recent being a heel injury, which he had to operate on in 2023. The selectors are quoted to be worried that he is at 34, and thus unable to manage the workload of international cricketing, particularly in Tests. His previous knee surgery and frequent problems with fitness have made them even more careful to put him back into the team set up.

While there are rumours of poor communication between Shami and the selectors, BCCI sources have clarified that the situation is more about his fitness and long-term management. The board continues to track his recovery and workload in domestic cricket. A potential return may depend on how his body responds over the next few months and whether he can prove his match fitness ahead of India’s future Test assignments.
“There have been multiple times that national selectors and support staff from the BCCI Centre of Excellence have called to check on Shami. The selection committee was desperate to get his services in England as Jasprit Bumrah could not have played more than three Tests,” said a senior board official as quoted by Hindustan Times.
This was seen in communication by one of the older members of the selection panel who had made numerous calls to Shami urging him to go and play in the India A series against the England Lions in England. These matches provided the selectors with a great chance to test the red-ball fitness of Shami before the series of 5 Tests.

Mohammed Shami, however, is reported to have declined the offer on the grounds that there was a need to have more time to get more work and to achieve full match fitness. He further added that he was not interested in the assignment then, but would rather have a slow recovery program than rushing back to competition.
“So the narrative that there was no communication with Shami isn’t an absolute truth,” the official said.
Mohammed Shami Shines in Ranji Trophy but India Comeback Still Uncertain

The right-arm fast bowler has come out with a spectacular beginning to the Ranji Trophy season of Bengal and has become a very crucial member of his team. He has already achieved 15 wickets in the first two games of Bengal making him the key to the team winning over Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Shami is questionable in his international comeback despite his domestic performance being exceptional.
His next opportunity to play for India could be in the next ODI and T20I series against South Africa, however his prospects of selection remain small at the moment.
